History

Thorpe Hall at Longthorpe, Peterborough, is a Grade I listed building, built by Peter Mills between 1653 and 1656, for the Lord Chief Justice, Oliver St John. The house is unusual in being one of the very few mansions built during the Commonwealth period. From 1943 to 1970 Thorpe Hall was used as a maternity hospital, transferred to the NHS (Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Management Committee) of the East Anglian Regional Hospitals Board in 1948. In 1986 it was acquired by the Sue Ryder Foundation and is currently in use as a hospice.

Current day hospice

Today Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice provides palliative and end of life care for terminally ill patients in a 20 bed purpose built facility situated in the grounds of the original mansion house. The hospice also supports family and friends of patients, provides a day service for those with long term conditions and a Hospice at Home service.

To do this costs £2.8 million a year - £1.5 million of that has to be fundraised by the charity.
